The part of a campaign nobody prepares you for
Hey there,
I’m going to say something that a campaign manager probably isn’t supposed to 6 days before an election.
The worst thing that could happen to us right now is that people start believing we’ve already won.
Some polls in this race are looking good for us. Hey, I’ll take it. Sherrod’s supporters, friends, and family keep sending them to me with words of encouragement. It means a lot to know we’re building something so powerful together.
But here’s why I’m still not sleeping well.
WHAT I KEEP HEARING
A poll from Marist had Sherrod up 48%-44% against his opponent. A few days later, Insider Advantage had them 47%-44%. Then, Echelon Insights reported that the race is dead even: 47%-47% with one week to go.
A lot of people are seeing these polls. There are more out there than ever, and at this point in a campaign, I can’t blame people for hoping that the positive ones are more accurate than the ones that say this is exactly tied.
The problem? I’m also hearing from some folks who are convinced this race is over. That we’re going to be fine. That we can just coast until Election Day.
And that’s my nightmare. Because anyone in politics will tell you that trusting polls can be your downfall. Folks remember 2016, right? I also remember 2024, and how devastating it was to be reminded that polls don’t win elections – votes do.
THE MATH
In 2024, Sherrod lost his race by about 3 points. That’s not a blowout by any means. It came down to just 33 votes per precinct. That sort of margin stays with you.
If we’re going to win this time around, we need to do everything right. We need to keep our voter outreach growing until polls close on November 3rd. We need to keep hosting events statewide to energize our base and get them out to vote. We need to spread our message to voters and combat the onslaught of attacks and lies Republicans are hurling against Sherrod.
Polling is a snapshot in time and it proves our campaign has a winning strategy. But practically every single poll I’ve seen has this within the margin of error. The most recent public poll has us tied, trending in the wrong direction. The polls right now aren’t clear about who’s winning, but they do tell us with certainty that this is going to come down to the wire — and I refuse to come up 33 votes per precinct short this time.
NATIONAL REPUBLICANS AREN’T LETTING UP
Republicans’ playbook this cycle is more of the same corruption. They’re catering to out-of-state billionaires, corporate special interests, and loyalists to Donald Trump to try and buy another Senate seat and hold onto their power. Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, data centers, Big Pharma, all want to make sure this seat stays in the hands of someone who will put their interests over Ohioans’. They know that’s not Sherrod.
Total spending in this race has just passed $500 million dollars. National Republicans account for $320 million of that. That’s 64%. It’s obscene. And it’s insulting to Ohio voters for them to think they can blanket our screens with lies and fear mongering – and win.
Donald Trump and JD Vance are all-in on winning in Ohio. That’s why the White House has held no less than 5 rallies here in a month. They wouldn’t be spending their time and money here if they didn’t think Jon Husted had a shot.
WHAT NOW?
I don’t blame people for looking at polls or analyzing early voting results. But election results aren’t a weather forecast we’re just waiting on. We have the power to change the outcome. Every day, we get to wake up and decide what we are going to do to make sure the results go our way.
So here’s my ask of you today. Sherrod Brown has a winning vision and a winning team beside him – that’s thanks to you. If you can spare a few hours to volunteer for our campaign, that matters. If you can’t, the most impactful thing you can do is chip in directly to our campaign using this link here.
Thanks for reading this.
