Sherrod Brown’s Path To Victory

Hi there,

Welcome to the official Substack for Sherrod Brown’s campaign headquarters.

Ohio’s Senate seat is winnable, and we’re going to prove it to you.

Before Sherrod got in this race, pollsters, and pundits were quick to count Ohio out. But we’ve seen the tides change. Now, nonpartisan election experts at Sabato’s Crystal Ball and The Cook Political Report (just to name a few) have ranked Sherrod’s race a “Toss Up” and polling is statistically tied. Every day, more and more people agree that Ohio is in play.

That kind of momentum doesn’t happen by accident. It’s because of the strategy we’ve been executing since day one, and because of the support from people like you who are making all of this possible.

That’s why we’re launching this Substack — to give you a direct line to what’s happening on Sherrod Brown’s campaign and to tell you how you can get involved. We’re going to use this space to give you the behind-the-scenes read on everything from polls and race rankings to breaking news.

But first, here’s our plan to win this thing:

1) Sherrod is out in the field, meeting folks like you every day. And it’s moving the numbers.

Sherrod’s first priority has always been fighting for Ohio families – and that starts with meeting folks where they are and hearing directly about their concerns. That’s why Sherrod is traveling to every corner of this state – from Warren to Marietta to Cincinnati and everywhere in between – to engage in the community, share his message, and listen to Ohioans.

Recently, Sherrod hosted a meet and greet with a group of veterans in Cincinnati. Folks across the state are feeling it: costs are too high and paychecks are too low. At the same time, politicians like Jon Husted are putting critical VA benefits on the chopping block, benefits that our brave service members rely on. Too often, our veterans are left behind and overlooked. That’s why Sherrod is making a point of reaching this community directly. And people are showing up – to connect with this campaign and express their support.

In Grove City, we saw the same thing: people are getting involved with this race because they understand we can change things for the better.

Unlike his opponent, Sherrod is taking every chance he can get to connect with Ohioans directly – and he’s just getting started. And what we’re seeing is incredible: rooms filled with Ohioans who are ready to make their voices heard and demand change in November.

2) Our direct voter contact operation is outworking the odds.

It’s no secret that we have our work cut out for us in Ohio. We’re home to 88 counties, over 11 million residents, and more than 7 million registered voters.

That’s why we’re in the field already, building up our direct voter contact operation early. We’ve already had thousands of conversations with persuadable voters across the state, and we will reach hundreds of thousands more before the polls close on Election Day.

In a midterm year, turnout typically craters. So this exact type of direct voter contact is what will help us move the needle in our favor. Building – and sustaining – this type of operation is precisely what moves a race from “lean Republican” into “toss up” territory. So we aren’t slowing down any time soon.

That means building a robust volunteer operation, hiring a large field organizing staff, and continuing to innovate on the best way to reach and mobilize Ohioans.

3) We’re matching Republican ad spending and staying competitive on the airwaves.

We simply can’t knock on every Ohioan’s door or reach them at an event, so we have to get creative about how we send out Sherrod’s message. Since May, we’ve been running TV and digital ads statewide in hard-to-reach areas and markets to ensure Sherrod’s message lands with our top voter targets.

We’re bought into media markets across the state. This means people from Youngstown to Delaware to Cincinnati are hearing Sherrod’s message of lowering costs and taking on the rigged system.

You can watch our latest ad about Sherrod’s plan to take on insurance companies for wrongly denying Ohioans’ claims here:

But Republicans are spending too. They’ve committed to investing over $100 million in Ohio – their largest investment of any battleground state nationwide – because they think they can drown us out.

With a strong grassroots base, we can stay competitive and keep our own ads on the air until Election Day.

Here’s where you come in.

Everything we’ve laid out? That’s just how we’ve gotten to this point. But our work is just getting started, and we need you by our side to set all of these plans in motion. It’s the only way we’ll be able to host our events, out-organize the Republican operation, and stay competitive with over $100 million of Republican ad spending.

Last election, Sherrod’s campaign broke the record for the most expensive Senate race in history. Now, we’re on track to shatter that record again. And with Sherrod statistically tied with his opponent in the polls, we can’t afford to slip up or slow down.

We’re grateful you’ve read this far and that you’re joining us in this fight. Truly, supporters like you have kept us in this fight since day one. You’re a big part of how this race has become a key state in our fight for Senate control.

As polls tighten and GOP dark money floods the airwaves, your support in this next stretch matters now more than ever. But if we don’t have the momentum to keep scaling up, we’ll open the door for Sherrod’s opponent to swoop in and take the lead.

If you’re in the position to make a contribution right now, this is exactly the right moment. Even a $5 donation today could be the most strategic decision to make in Democrats’ fight to flip Ohio and retake the Senate. Will you chip in so we can keep the momentum of this campaign going and help Sherrod Brown flip Ohio?
